A Thanksgiving potluck works when every dish has a name next to it before anyone goes shopping. The easiest sign up sheet for that is the invite itself: guests open one link, say whether they’re coming, and claim the dish they’re bringing in the same visit. Everyone sees what’s already taken, and you see who’s bringing what, all in one place.

A Thanksgiving potluck sign up sheet that lives on the invite

On Celebrations, your Thanksgiving invite carries a list of the dishes the meal needs.

  • You add the dishes, named by course (“Side: stuffing”, “Dessert: pumpkin pie”), and say in the invite what you’re covering yourself.
  • You send one link to the family group chat, by text or by email.
  • Guests RSVP and claim a dish under their name, without making an account. Each dish can be claimed by one guest.
  • Everyone sees the gaps. A claimed dish moves to “Already covered”, so nobody brings a second stuffing by accident.
  • You see who’s bringing what and who hasn’t replied. Turn on the food restrictions question and every reply carries dietary needs with it.

The same dish list on a phone: dinner rolls and apple pie still open to claim, and mashed potatoes under "Already covered"

Make your Thanksgiving invite with a dish sign up list. It’s free, and the dishes below are ready to add.

What to put on your Thanksgiving potluck list

The host covers the main dish, because it needs the oven for hours, and cranberry sauce is an easy second. These nine dishes cover everything else for a table of 12:

  • Side: stuffing (1 large pan)
  • Side: mashed potatoes (6 lb of potatoes)
  • Side: sweet potatoes (1 dish)
  • Side: something green (1 dish)
  • Rolls and butter (2 dozen rolls)
  • Dessert: pumpkin pie
  • Dessert: pecan or apple pie
  • Dessert: baker’s choice, not pie
  • Drinks and ice (10 to 15 lb of ice)

Keep a couple of dishes loose (“something green”, “baker’s choice”) so the cousin with the famous recipe has room for it. Each dish is claimed by one guest, so when you need two of something, add it twice.

For 20 guests, add a second pan of stuffing, a second green vegetable, a salad, two more pies, something to nibble before dinner and a dozen more rolls. If anyone has an allergy, add a dish for it (“Side: gluten-free stuffing”).

Add these dishes to your invite’s list and guests claim them when they RSVP. A free invite holds nine dishes, which fits the list for 12 exactly, and shows every detail of the first 15 replies that say yes or maybe (a family replying together counts once). Past nine dishes, upgrade that one invite (a one-time payment, see pricing) for a list of up to 50.

Thanksgiving potluck ideas, including for guests who don’t cook

The best potluck dishes travel well and arrive ready to serve, because the host’s oven is busy until dinner.

  • Something to nibble: a cheese board, cruditĂ©s and dip, spiced nuts, stuffed mushrooms.
  • Starchy sides: stuffing, mac and cheese, scalloped potatoes, cornbread.
  • Sweet sides: sweet potato casserole, maple roasted squash, glazed carrots.
  • Green or fresh: roasted green beans, a Brussels sprouts salad, a kale and apple salad.
  • A vegetarian main: stuffed squash or a mushroom and lentil pie.
  • No oven needed: slow-cooker mashed potatoes, cranberry relish, grain salads.
  • Desserts: pumpkin, pecan and apple pie, then pumpkin bars, apple crisp or a cheesecake.

For guests who don’t cook, these are real jobs on the list: rolls from a good bakery, drinks and ice, a store-bought pie or the ice cream and whipped cream, flowers for the table, folding chairs or a slow cooker the host is short on, and a washing-up crew of two.

Thanksgiving potluck ideas for work

A work potluck is lunch in a room with a fridge, a microwave and no oven. Have the office cover the main, fill the list with slow-cooker and cold dishes, and ask everyone to label what’s in their dish. The potluck occasion page has invite designs for an office potluck.

A Thanksgiving invitation message for family

Thanksgiving is at ours this year! Thursday the 26th, dinner at 4. I’ve got the main dish and cranberry sauce. Pick your dish on the invite so we don’t end up with four pies and no potatoes: [link]. Please claim one by Sunday the 15th. Bring it ready to serve, and bring a container for leftovers.

When to send the sign up sheet

  • Three to four weeks out (by November 5): send the invite with your dish list.
  • About ten days before (November 15): claim deadline. Message anyone who hasn’t replied, or cover the gaps yourself.
  • The weekend before: send a reminder naming the dishes still open.
  • The day before: make the cranberry sauce and clear fridge space for dishes that arrive cold.
  • On the day: ask guests to arrive half an hour before dinner, so dishes land while the main finishes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a Thanksgiving potluck sign up sheet?

Make your Thanksgiving invite, add the dishes the meal needs to its list (named by course, with the amount next to each), say what you’re covering yourself, and send the link. Guests claim a dish when they RSVP.

Is there a free online or printable Thanksgiving sign up sheet?

On Celebrations, a free Thanksgiving invite carries a list of up to nine dishes that guests claim from their phones. It does the job of a printed sheet, and everyone sees what’s taken wherever they open it.

What should the host make for a Thanksgiving potluck?

The main dish, because it needs the host’s oven for hours. Cranberry sauce is an easy second, since it’s made the day before.

How many dishes should each guest bring?

One per household. Let people choose rather than assigning dishes, and match the ask to the guest: someone driving three hours brings rolls or a pie, not a casserole that needs reheating.

Is it rude to ask Thanksgiving guests to bring a dish?

No. Most guests would rather bring something than arrive empty-handed. Ask a few weeks ahead and cover the main dish yourself.
